Medical

Even when treated, leprosy leaves insurmountable medical issues that last a lifetime. With the colonies’ inhabitants’ isolation from normal society, the medical needs of those afflicted, as well as their families’, are severely neglected.

Embrace a Village currently serves the medical needs for over 25 villages. The other medical teams make visits throughout the villages more than once a week, cleaning, medicating, and re-bandaging wounds. They also schedule and arrange transportation to and from formal doctor or clinic appointments. These programs have been successful due to the exceptional care provided by the medical teams, earning the patients’ trust.

We also employ a full-time professional shoemaker who travels around the state of Tamil Nadu assessing footwear needs, sizing each foot, and manufacturing the ideal shoe for each patient’s feet. His shoes eliminate abrasive areas, the need for going barefoot, and further foot care awareness.

Due to the high demand and need for these services, in 2009 Embrace a Village opened two permanent clinics staffed with physicians when possible. This allows for a much larger inventory of medicine and treatments, as well as a permanent gathering place for treatment.
