As we hit the ground running in 2025, we’re reminded of the incredible impact of love, education, and hope in the lives of children who have faced unimaginable hardships. Today, we want to share Gangayamma’s story – a story of resilience, transformation, and the power of believing in a child’s future.
Gangayamma, an 11-year-old girl from the Thalaivasal leprosy colony, grew up surrounded by stigma and isolation. Her family, like so many others in the colony, was defined by a disease that cast a long shadow over their lives. She struggled in school, her confidence was low, and her dreams felt out of reach.
But everything changed when she joined the Little Lights Afterschool Program through Embrace A Village.
At first, she struggled – especially in English and Tamil. But our compassionate teachers saw beyond her difficulties. They saw potential. With patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in her abilities, Gangayamma began to thrive.
Beyond academics, she found a safe space where she was seen, valued, and uplifted. Each evening, as she sat alongside other children eager to learn, something remarkable happened – she discovered her own courage.
And it wasn’t just the education that changed her life. A simple meal – a plate of rice, dal, and vegetables – became a reminder that she mattered. For many of these children, the meals we provide are the most consistent source of nourishment in their lives.
Gangayamma’s story is one of transformation – but there are so many more children waiting for the same opportunity.
In 2025, we are committed to reaching even more children with education, meals, and the message that their future is not defined by leprosy or poverty, but by the hope they dare to hold onto.
Will you help us continue to bring light into the lives of children like Gangayamma?
